When I first started taking this class I literally thought that I would be learning a lot about the engineering in equipment in our history such as war vehicles, and other types of old operations pieces throughout history. Turns out I was completely wrong and there is much more to the word engineering that I thought that there was. Engineering does not strictly mean the engineering of things like vehicles or equipment like most people things. It means so much more, engineering means the building of something. One example that we have studied this year is Hagias Sophia, this is a famous structure that was engineered by humans and hold a very significant spot in our history. Also a good example of engineering is water. Humans have engineered water into so many different things and have made it extremely helpful and important to things in our everyday life that we would have never thought of before.
Natives and compensation
I do believe that the Tohono O’ odham have been adequately compensated for their losses by the United States for many different reasons. This event happened long ago and the fact that they were even compensated means a lot, because many things in our history went as a loss and were never compensated for. In this particular even the tribe had their land taken away from them during what many known as The Gadsden Purchase. This was a huge loss for them and they struggled for many years to try and recover. Although the United States did take these things away from them, later in time they did what was right and tried their best to give proper compensation for the natives. The U.S has made water funds for them, and has also given them more land that was taken away from them so long ago. They have given them more water rights which many people do not realize that this day in age water and land is still just as important, if not more. In my opinion they have been properly treated for what happened in the past, and it is shocking to me that it even happened. Imagine if everything that was taken from areas in our past had to be compensated it would be a total disaster of things because that is just the way our history was, its how things happened. I feel as though they should be extremely thankful for their compensation and happy about it.
Water Woes
If I could turn back time I would offer some good advice that I learned while reading these articles. I would first start by telling Turkey, Iraq, and Syria that by cutting water and resources off from one another, will not solve anything at all. Some good advice for them would be better management. From reading these articles it seemed as though they were to busy fighting with one another over water that they just kept making the situation worse. Stop, think, and manage would have been a lot more useful during these tough times. Management will do wonder when you actually sit down and analyze a situation and take action on it. They could have also tried recycling their water, which by doing that it would also take management. By recycling their water they would not have had the conflict of sucking their aquifers dry. Aquifers are non replenish able, that seems very scary. Although with proper action this issue could be reduced.
I do think that leaders would view my suggestions of better management, and recycling worth implementing. Its amazing at how much easier and rational things can be when everyone quits fighting and puts their heads together, I understand this was a time of war but they did more than just kill people, they killed their water supply at their own fault.
Some pieces of information that I would need that I did not get while reading these articles would be their global warming and climate conditions during this time. Today this type of information comes in very handy when deciding how they will manage their water. Also things such as rainfall are very important to know. What were their water laws? who made the decisions and why? Did they have any actual knowledge of the system or were they just born into the position?
