In my concept map I felt to modernize the historical locations read about there needed to be four main points met. Preservation, Religious Beliefs, Tourism, and Income. They all support each other in some way or another. For example preservation can not happen without income, Tourism can not happen with out the religious beliefs, income needs tourism, and the survival of what religious beliefs are about can not happen with out the preservation of the building it is held in.
4.2 Other Large Sacred Structures
I found though my reading and other research that most of the structures did seem to focus more on preservation. Some would do annual maintenance , celebrations to pass down traditions, or rebuild the entire structure. Along with restricting general citizen or tourist usage or not allowing it at all.
Modernization seems to be updating with modern amenities such as electricity, HVAC and toilets, which some have not done to maintain historical integrity. Most of the modernization that has been done is a way for the structure to be turned into a tourist attraction to obtain funds to aid in preservation of the structures.
Concept Map-Preservation and Modernization of historical structures
My concept map may seem a little messy but I feel that all the subjects correlate with one another. To preserve a structure you must take safety measures such as; security, ropes, certain visiting hours and a no-touch policy. To preserve you must also rebuild and touch up structures and artifacts. To modernize a structure you must have lighting, bathrooms, websites, tour guides and so on. To do all of these things it takes money. Most of these structures charge to visit the site or at least the museum. A lot of these structures host festivities and events to bring in revenue. They are also receiving funding, whether from the government or from other parties. Its a cycle, for example to keep a structure relevant and up to date it takes money, to receive that money you charge for tours.
I did find it interesting that to preserve the sacredness of the Great Mosque of Djenne, non-muslims have been banned since Vogue (in 1996) took risqué photographs inside the building.
