The Brooklyn Bridge and the Golden Gate both have similar qualities in design. For example, they have cable suspension engineering with two towers acting as support for the cables. They also connect two points of major cities, Brooklyn being New York City, and Golden Gate being San Francisco and Marin County. These two bridges are pretty similar in structure, only their placement and coloring differ, with Brooklyn a grey brick color and Golden Gate a copper rusty color. As for how people take pictures of them, I can see Brooklyn pictures using a lot of the city as a background. This is mostly due to pretty much all around the bridge is city. As for Golden Gate, I see more beauty in the pictures. Each picture is from an angle that shows how magnificent just the bridge is, some are even taken during that night which shows off its luminous lights.
Since the Brooklyn Bridge was built during the late 1800’s and designed by a German immigrant and his son, John and Washington Roebling, it shows a little bit of a European style of architecture. The two towers have almost a Gothic look to them which is tall arches that show a power stature. Also as a added note, the bridge was built to be six times stronger than it needed to be.
As for the Golden Gate, this bridge was built towards the mid 1900’s and as such was bit different when building. They first of all had safety nets put out for the workers which minimized the death toll to 11 men, rather than the 20 lost building the Brooklyn Bridge. Those who survived the fall by being caught by the net join what was called the “half-way to hell” club. As for the coloring of the bridge, it was suggested to be a black and yellow striped color for ships to see it, but was changed to the orange we see today because the orange was used as a coating for air quality reasons.
Both these bridges are known worldwide and are a big part of cities they reside in. They show the American engineering and prowls to build amazing constructions. Because of this we admire it and use it our culture to be recognized.
Camilla Swainston
Hello, my name is Camilla Swainston. I am a biology major at Boise State University. I grew up in Idaho for most of my life but spent the first five years in Spokane Washington. I grew up around a lot of animals and that is what spawned my desire to go to veterinary school after I complete my bachelor degree. I watch the news a couple times a week to try and stay updated on current events. I usually spend my leisure time going on hikes with my dog, we enjoy finding new places to go and discover the beauties of earth, which is part of the reason I decided to take this course. I wanted to find out more about the earth because I find it extremely beautiful. I believe that all things have value, and that humans need to help nourish and strengthen every part of the earth from the animals to the plants because they are all vital to our survival. I had a rudimentary belief of the world as I grew up because I didn’t have much access to it since electronics were not as advanced but as I went through high school I gained a much larger realization of how the world works because I had access to classes that dealt with it. I took a Climate Change class last semester and that helped to bring me up to date on how the world is changing and possible reasons why it is going through these changes. That in turn sparked my interest to learn more about the earth.
Madison Klein- Lens
Hi! I’m Madison but I go by Maddy. ThisĀ is my second semester here at BSU. I did go to a community college near my hometown for a year before transferring here. I appreciated that year at a smaller school because it was a good transition from high school to a big university. I moved here from a small town in Southwest Washington that doesn’t even have a stoplight. My family raised beef cattle, and growing up I rodeoed and showed cattle. My horses were very important to me, and how I relaxed and how I escaped the pressures of school and work and whatever else life threw my way.
I’m from a middle-class, conservative family. Growing up, I think this narrowed my views on certain things, mostly because I didn’t encounter very many diverse views. My real-world experience was a bit limited. This wasn’t because my parents sheltered me in any way, but more because there just wasn’t a lot going on in my small town. They always encouraged me to go away to college, because it was my chance to see the world in an environment that was different and that I could make my own. For my upbringing, I like to consider myself extremely open minded; there are a lot of people where I’m from who aren’t as accepting. So, my “lens” is ever-changing as I gain new experiences and knowledge about the world. Moving to Boise was a big deal for me, and I learn new things every day. The world is so full of people and ideas, and I am loving my experiences away from home. My major is pre-radiology, and I am taking this class to fulfill my DLL. I chose this class specifically because the topics we are expected to cover interested me.
