My concept map may seem a little messy but I feel that all the subjects correlate with one another. To preserve a structure you must take safety measures such as; security, ropes, certain visiting hours and a no-touch policy. To preserve you must also rebuild and touch up structures and artifacts. To modernize a structure you must have lighting, bathrooms, websites, tour guides and so on. To do all of these things it takes money. Most of these structures charge to visit the site or at least the museum. A lot of these structures host festivities and events to bring in revenue. They are also receiving funding, whether from the government or from other parties. Its a cycle, for example to keep a structure relevant and up to date it takes money, to receive that money you charge for tours.
I did find it interesting that to preserve the sacredness of the Great Mosque of Djenne, non-muslims have been banned since Vogue (in 1996) took risqué photographs inside the building.
